Last week children at Greenland Community Primary School welcomed Kevan Jones, Member of Parliament for North Durham at their award-winning breakfast club.

Pupils are offered a free breakfast of cereal, toast and fruit at the start of the school day, and the club has won national prizes in the Kellogg’s Breakfast Awards.  Kellogg’s provide food for the club, which also offers the pupils a chance to socialise with each other before they go in to class.

“It was a pleasure to visit Greenland and see the pupils tucking in to a healthy breakfast.  School mornings are hectic for many families, and offering breakfast at school means that parents have one less thing to worry about.  The children told me how much they enjoy coming to the club with their friends.”

Head Teacher Mark Stewart said :

“We are very proud of our breakfast club, which helps to ensures a healthy start to the day for those that attend.  It is a relaxed environment where children can socialise with both peers and staff, leaving happy and ready to learn.

Our free Breakfast Club is one of our most popular out of school provisions with over 70 children children attending every day.

The children and staff really enjoyed meeting our local Member of Parliament and sharing breakfast together.  They are immensely proud of our breakfast club and welcomed the opportunity to tell him all about it.”
